what are some good rechniques for straightening leaders. Maybe mine are just too old but I cant seem to get the curl out of them. Have tried grabbing both ends and gently stretching them but the curls persist. Right now I assume the colder temps dont help any but this is still an issue for me. My reels are large arbor so at least that has been addressed.

Hi, Bob, You can usually straighten a leader by pulling the line thru your fingers and building a little heat from the friction and that will help straighten your leader. They make leader straighteners that have a rubber pad and a leather pad to pull the leader thru. I use one of those, it gives me a better grip on the line. Be careful pulling the leader thru those. Some think the rubber burns the line and weakens it. If your leaders haven’t been properly stored you may just want to get new ones.

Bob, I no longer store my leader on my reel. I carefully wind it back into a loop like the way it came. Next time fishing before attaching it to my line I unwind leader and tippet and begin stretching them in 2 to 3-ft segments. It helps. Catching a big fish will straighten it too!

One other technique is to attach a small weight to the end of your leader and hang it up by the butt end. Allow the weight to stretch and straighten your leader. Have never tried this but if “heat” helps straighten a leader try using a hair dryer on the line while it is hanging with the weight. I wouldn’t get the line too hot. After you try it let me know how it turned out.
