Okay boys, I have met my match, I throw up my hands in complete surrender to this fly pattern. I have tried small bundles, medium size bundles of Elk hair, I have even tried gluing the butts together to only find failure. I can not get the Elk hair to set atop the hook, it rolls, it is to short, to long or it just falls apart. Who ever thought of tying this fly in our Wednesday night session? Oh wait! I think I did. Frustration is mounting. Three or four bobbins with thread have already been jettisoned into orbit.

Tim LOL. I appreciate your post! I feel a lot better that a skilled fly tyer as yourself is frustrated with tying this pattern. I’m with you brother! Unfortunately, I can not make the fly tying sessions on Wednesday, but follow the current fly pattern of the week by tying it at home. I have come to a conclusion with this fly pattern, it is easier to buy the fly from Wooly Bugger.

A couple of weeks ago we had a discussion about Peacock herl and the importance of quality material. I believe that also applies to Elk hair. What I had was old and brittle. I went out and bought the best piece of hair I could find. I looked for elk hair with no taper but came to abrupt tips. I did find a piece of cow elk. It has helped some. I also went from TMC200R size 14 to a size 12. I have completed my first Stimulator, is it good? Well, it is good enough to fish when no one is looking. Buy from Wooly Bugger, best advise today.

      Ah Grasshoppers,
You must play this music to tie well.

Thanks for the video Kenny. I have started subbing out some of the materials in order to make the fly a little easier. For instance: I dropped the gold wire and tie in the hackle and then palmer it forward. Also, subbed yellow floss for dubbing of the abdomen. Works alright unless you have rough dry hands. But you can’t stray to far from the designed pattern are you lose the integrity of the fly.
