Forum Home › Fly Tying › Slump buster jig
I’ve been trying to tie something resembling a slump buster on a jig hook and I’m not real crazy about how it’s turned out. It feels crowded. Maybe I need a longer jig hook? I’ve tried using doing the squirrel collar as a dubbing loop, but not crazy about that either. Had anyone tried this? Or have a pattern for this that’s worked for them? Or maybe I shouldn’t get hung up on using a jig hook and stick with using a streamer hook.
Any thoughts?
Dave you didn’t say what length of hook you were using. I’d try a 4x long before giving up.
I think I was using a Firehole 551. Maybe I should try the 523.
The longer 3xl hook made the difference.
I’m anxious to go fish it!
Here’s a similar pattern. This is a killer right below the Table Rock dam. It’s fun to watch the fish follow it along the bottom as you strip it back. Use very short stirps. Keep it as close to the bottom on the rocks as best you can. Best colors per Lisa Belleu (Flies and Guides) is varigated gold (sunny day) varigated grey (overcast day).http://www.mtfa-springfield.org/resources/fly-tying-recipes-patterns/taneycomo-sculpin/
