Last night near the end of our Kenny Zoom session, someone asked a question about lead wire to weight their nymphs. I introduced the idea of using two tungsten beads. Yes, I heard the snickers and yes I got scuffed at. But the idea of adding weight with 2 or 3 beads is not knew. Charlie Craven uses this method when he ties his Problem Child pattern and we used it last year when we tied the Holy Grail in our Thursday night fly tying. So, this technique is not new.

Now this is new. This morning I received an email from FIREHOLE OUTDOORS, one of our sponsors, introducing a whole new concept of how to weight flies. It is the Hook-Based Weight Management System. This system introduces the use of Tear Drop Bodies to weight your flies. Also, a bug band that has a number of uses, a transition between the bead and the tear shaped body and as a hot spot. The bands come in multiple colors.

Take a look at FireHole Outdoors, if interested.

Thanks, and Laugh all you want.

No snickers by me. I appreciate you sharing the 2 bead system for weight. I’m going to incorporate this system into my fly tying when needing extra weight to get the flies down in the water column. I have used a plastic florescent colored bead behind a tungsten bead as a hot spot, instead of using thread or dubbing. It has worked well.

You were thinking ahead of the industry with the 2 bead system. I received the same email from FireHole about there hook-weight based system. Basically, similar to your suggestion of 2 beads. I have copy and paste FireHole email below for anyone interested.

Firehole Outdoors Hook-Based Weight Management System

Firehole Outdoors is pleased to announce the availability of the world’s first hook-based weight management system for the fly tying/fishing industry.
<p style=”text-align: center;”>Under development for the better part of five years, I am happy to present to you a system designed to give the fly tyer an easy and precise method to weight their flies. This system incorporates three components; a tungsten bead, a brass bug band, and a tungsten tear drop body. With nearly 600 available weight combinations ranging from 0.02 grams to 1.58 grams, the tyer is able to create the right combination for their specific needs.

As you might imagine there is a lot to talk about with this system. To keep this email short and clean I have created an informational page as well as downloadable PDF documentation to explain the details, usage, and components. You can view the information and download the files by clicking the button below. I really encourage you to take a few minutes to read this document.</p>
Also, the 4.5mm ROUND tungsten stone has been released as part of this entire program. Note that the 4.5mm ROUND tungsten bead is offered in forty (40) piece packaging in order to maintain the same pricing across all sizes.

Kenny, it is your teaching, move, move, tie them knots faster and mend, mend, mend. I hear it in my sleep at night. Of course you yell this in that drill sergeant voice of yours.

Been waiting a long time for system like this. I just didn’t know what I was waiting for.
