The fly fishing catch and release season ends this February 12th. That’s the last day, then two weeks off (in the parks only remember) and then the crazy March 1st opening day. Yes, you won’t find me within 100 miles of the parks on that day.
Right now Maramec Spring park has some BIG trout in there. And after March 1st when the bait chuckers arrive they will be pulled out and hopefully, at least, eaten. SO if you want the opportunity to catch that over 20 inch rainbow (yes, really over 20 inches) you only have a week to do it. Many have been rising and tailing in several areas but they will only take small stuff. We have seen midges and BWOs rising and getting sipped off the surface and just below the surface. Slowly strip tiny flies like size 22-20 Griffith’s Gnats or Barr’s Emergers. DON’T set the hook at the strike just SLOWLY RAISE YOUR ROD TIP and they’ll be on.
