I am a fan of the TMC 2499SP-BL hooks. But, since the smallest size in this model is #18, what do you guys think of using TMC 2488 for smaller hook sizes? Looks like both have a curved shank, 2X short shank, straight eye, and 3X wide gape.
The 2488 doesn’t have the super point and you would have to mash the barb. Also the 2488 is made of fine wire, but maybe it is not possible to make hooks size #20 and smaller with the 2x heavy wire used in the 2499SP-BL.
What hooks do you guys use for tying your smallest nymphs and RS2s?

Dia Riki 125s are 2x short but they too are a lighter wire hook. I use them for Midges and Barrs Emergers. They do have barbs so you have to smash barbs. You might check out Firehole Outdoors, Firesticks and see what they have, they are a new company making some pretty nice competition hooks. They are a little pricey though. Fly Fish Food also sells those and hooks from other makers.

I have checked my comparison charts and can not come up with a substitute for the 2499. You might consider TMC 2487 or the TMC 2488. The gap is different but the 2487 is barbless. Here is what I do when I can’t match up the size I want. Say, I want to tie a size 20, but all I have is an #18 hook. I would use the #18 but tie small. That is to say tie a size 20 body on the 18, of course all the other portions of the fly would reduce down also.
As a side bar: I buy a bunch of hooks from Allen Fly Fishing. They have great hooks at a fair price. Or try
J. Stockard. Stockard is slow on delivery, my opinion, their stuff ships from the east coast.Sorry I could not help more.

Thanks Bill and Tim! I do like the idea of tying a small (tiny) fly on a “larger” hook, especially since that “larger” hook would have a bigger gap than the tiny hook. BUT…won’t the size of the larger hook (even if tied with a smaller fly) be perceived by the trout as a larger offering? I don’t know what fish actually see, but won’t they include the size of the hook when they are considering taking the fly? Just asking…I don’t have enough experience to draw on for this quandary.

That is a good question, “what does a trout see”. The idea of tying small has been around a long time. The competition nymph guys use a lot of Perdigon nymph patterns. I have looked at these and even tied up a few. What is most visible the short bodies compared to the length of the hook, tying small. So, if the competition guys or doing it and catching fish, I would say the hook visibility is nile. Pretty bold statement, But it is Saturday morning. Besides I have to post something one time a week so that Kenny can make “Cannon Fodder” of me.

Well Tim, I’m here now and this discussion has been, how you say, right on. So proud of you guys with your ideas and techniques. As Jim says this is a quandary! Unfortunately, I went to a government school and have no idea what that word means! But that said, tying tiny flies is not only tedious but difficult – but they work!! (check out the latest tips article in our Fly Shop section).
First, the hook is important – how sharp it is, how wide is the gap, how ‘strong’ it is, etc. As you know I love the Tiemco 2499SP-BL. They are a little more expensive but worth it (I buy my from JS Stockard online in the winter months when they go on sale every year).
So here is a list of things to think about and discuss:
1.Wide gap more hookups?
2.Strong hook (heavier wire) won’t lose bigger fish?
3. Use a size 18 hook but tie the fly as a size 20 fly?
4.Barbless hooks versus bending down the barb – which has a longer “hook point” when doing this?(I think it’s the barbless hook meaning the hook is “deeper” in the fish so better hookups).
5. Check the “bend of the hook” is it straight or is there a slight twist to the hook. With the slight twist to the hook – better hook ups? The twist can make it just a little harder for the fish to break loose.
My answers to the above list is “yes”Great discussion! I have a book that shows underwater what the fish really see. I’ll pull it out and see if it would answer the “does the trout see the hook” problem.
Tight lines!!- This reply was modified 6 years ago by Kenny Klimes.

I just placed an order with J.Stockard for the TMC 2499BL-SP, I was almost out. Timely post.
I also did a search on what a trout sees, found a couple three post. The first was from the Gink&Gasoline news letter, titled, “What Does a Trout See”. The second, “Fish Eye Sight: Does Color Matter?” Midcurrent.
If I may, I would suggest that, if you have not already, get hooked up with these two weekly news letters. Another I really like is, “DIY-5 Bullet Friday”.
Another site used to be, Trout University, I think it has changed to “The Trout Pro Store”.
Just an FYI, you can do your own search if interested. Or wait for Kenny to brief us.

While you’re checking out hooks look at the Firehole hooks I have used them and they are a very good hook and have some that are smaller than the 2499 TMC and the price is good. And you get 35 hooks in a pack.
