Here is an easy one, if you know. What is the correct way to assemble your fly rod for a day on the river. I am asking Butt to Tip, or Tip to Butt and WHY? I don’t recall this being discussed in Kenny’s class. I even went back through my old notes from 2012.

There is no right or wrong way. I personally assemble the two tip sections and then the two butt sections. This makes it easier to then put those two pieces together and then align the guides.
Otherwise, I would start with the butt sections and work your way up the rod.

I think the correct way is tip to butt. Why? If you start at the butt and add the section with the stripping guide and then the next section and then the tip, 4 pcs rod, you will continually add more and more pressure to the butt section and the guide section.

I like your way the two tip sections and then the two butts. Would make assembly easier.

The pressure on the ferrules? I add the butt first and work up but never tighten my rod pieces – I leave them loose. Then I add my reel and use it to line my guides up on all four pieces. once lined up I then apply slight pressure to secure the four pieces from butt up. Never have a problem with taking rod apart if I do – I buy a new rod.

Pressure? Wrong word. I should have said force. By starting at the butt and assembling to the tip you add force to the butt section as you go. I think I am correct. I have never had a problem taking the rod down. Maybe it is because I can not afford a new rod. But then to each his own.

If you wax your ferrules should you have trouble disassembling your rod?

I’ve never tried waxing my rod ferrules. I’ve waxed my back – ugh – take that thought out of your mind. BUT, Tim has a good point on joining your rod sections together. I can see where starting from the butt section can make that section near the butt harder to get out when you add force to the upper sections. But, most of the time when I have a section that is hard to separate it’s one of the upper sections.

I don’t know about waxing. After the trip, when you get home and clean everything real good, maybe. Do you do that? How about the female side of the ferrule. My concern would be leaving a sticky substance on the ferrule that may pick up small particles of dirt or sand. Then the next time the rod is assembled, the ferrules would be contaminated, and you may end up with a couple of sections stuck together.

I do wax my wading staff, manufactures instruction, and he furnished the wax. But then my wading staff is not a broom stick.

I do not like adding wax or facial oils to any ferrules. They attract dirt and create suction when you try to take the rod sections apart. The best thing to do is clean the ferrules with alcohol and a Q-tip after each use. A clean ferrule is less likely to stick.
