I have found a new knot (well, it’s not new but new to me) to tie my flies on to my tippet. I used to use the improved clinch knot but I think I have found one better – stronger and easier to tie. Of course, if you have confidence in a knot and tie it well then you are probably pretty happy with the one you tie now. After some coaxing from a fellow fly fisher I decided to test the Double Davy knot. I reviewed some knot “testing” articles and most indicated that the Double Davy (NOT the Davy knot) was stronger than the improved clinch knot and smaller too. So far I really like the Double Davy and have found it to be stronger, smaller and easy to tie.

So what knot do you prefer to tie your small flies on to your tippet and why?

I have used the double davey with mixed results. It must be tied carefully so the tag end points sideways (at right angle to the fly). It wastes less tippet on a dropper fly than the clinch knot.

I agree it uses less tippet and for me it’s been very strong as long as the tag end points 90 degrees from the rest of the line. I just timed myself tying the knot after the tippet is already through the eye. Looks like I can tie it in 8 seconds. It’s become my favorite knot. Midcurrent.com has a good demonstration.

I agree with PDroc and Barry Dunnegan. The knot must be tied exactly as the video link above. I used the knot several years ago and it seemed to fail on me often so I gave up on it. About a year ago I saw the video link above and tied it as described making sure the tag end points at 90 degrees from the rest of the line. To my surprise the failing I’d experienced years ago came to an end. Since tying it that way the knot has held up well and has now become one of my favorite knots to use in most situations.

      Guys,
What about the Jacks knot? Anyone tried it yet? I haven’t tried it yet but looks super easy. Uses less tippet and small knot just like the Davy’s knots. You could do it in the dark! Ha (said in the video) I’m going to give it a try. The Davy and double Davy knot gives me trouble when my hands are cold. There’s also another knot that this guy has for tying tippet to tippet.

I don’t know about the Jacks
Knot but here is a tip on tying on flies during cold weather: feed tippet thru the hook eye and pull 3 to 4 inches thru. Hold tag end and running between thumb and forefinger. Take fly and twist 360 four times. Insert hemostat in loop in front of hook eye. Grab tag end of tippet and pull back thru loop. Spit on the knot and tighten.
