Being a beginner in this great sport of fly fishing I’m learning how important it is to identify the different insects and their stages of hatching. I have read several articles from Catch and the Hatch, and from Trout-bitten. They are very informative but I would like to have a book to use as an ongoing reference. I have found a couple of books on Amazon but if anyone has any suggestions please clue me in. I’m hopping to be able to get out with the stream team next time to absorb first hand knowledge.

      Steve,

“The Bug Book” by Paul Weamer is a good place to start. The book talks about the trout stream entomology and then the flies to match up with the the bugs or hatch. It even shares fishing techniques.

I think the book was about $20.00 on Amazon.

Steve, Tim made a good suggestion. Check and see if Amazon has used books with that title. You can save a lot of money that way. Also, did you look in the education area of this site? They have some information on the various insects there.

Steve, I hope the book works out for you.

Bill, I am guilty. I always go to our FATC web site first, before searching else where. I am guilty of assuming everyone does the same. I know the Russians visit the FATC site.

      Oh My Grasshoppers,

Proud it does me to see you seeking out education. Remember – a fly fisher’s success is predicated on the power of his knowledge.

Another great way to see first hand what is in our stream is to participate with our Missouri Stream Team.  Keep an eye out for date announcements when we head to the streams and see up close, what the fish are eating.

      Grasshopper,

Watch you must, the videos on the education section of this unbelievable website. Go to the Education section – Bug information.  Each aquatic insect has a video that will show you exactly what each of the four major aquatic insects look like for real. View these videos for the best “real” info.
