I’d like to take a trip up north to the Driftless area next year. Has anyone every fished this area, when is the best time to go and what location can you recommend?

Kenny,
I fished the Driftless near Madison and also Viroqua, Wisconsin. Madison is basically at the east edge of the Driftless and Viroqua is at the west edge.
This area is known for it’s small spring creeks. I fished Black Earth Creek and Gordon Creek in the Madison area and several creeks near Viroqua. The best information that I can give you is to contact the fly shop in Viroqua, Driftless Angler. If you send me an email address I can forward you some photos.

I am not sure if this river is part of the Driftless Region or not but from my research on Wisconsin trout Streams the Kinnickinnic River at River Falls Wisconsin is supposed to be the best in the state. I would be interested as well on a trip up to Wisconsin for fishing. My family and I have been going up to the Dells for years and have recently started to investigate fishing up there.

This river looks interesting but very close to the Twin Cities. I wonder if it gets fished a bunch? I don’t think it is considered part of the Driftless area but sounds like a good place to fish for brook and brown trout.
Did you know that a brook trout is not really a trout? It’s part of the Char family!

A few weeks ago I went down to Lanesboro, MN on a trout fishing recon mission. I too have had a long interest in the Driftless area. I was very encouraged by what I saw and learned. The area is beautiful. Steve, at the Root River Rod Company (Lanesboro) was very helpful. I plan to return soon for a guided wade fish – 1/2 day trip to learn the ins and outs.
I also purchased the book Trout Fishing in Southeast Minnesota which appears to be an excellent resource. By the end of June I will have been on waters in the Montrose, CO area, the Black Hills, SD and southeast Minnesota….grateful for Pfizer!
