I could use some tips on what to look for when buying Coq de Leon feathers. I am mainly interested in tailing for nymphs.
I have read about so many folks using these feathers for tailing material so I thought I’d buy some. Then got to looking and saw a lot of different types available: roosters vs hens, necks vs. saddles, tailing packs from Whiting Farms, etc. Also not sure about all the different colors and speckling patterns (light pardo, med. pardo, etc.).
So, what specific feathers am I looking for?
Where are the best places to buy it?
Any help appreciated.
Thank you!

I get your confusion. I gave up and just bought a medium Pardo Tailing Pack. I believe you can buy larger quantities if you use a lot of them. I like the way they look when tied on a fly.

If you are buying them to use for tails then I would get a “tailing” pack. They are great for tails – strong and durable. Pick colors that match your fly but if confused go with a ginger or pardo (mottled look) color pack. My recommendation would be to buy good quality. They are expensive but I think are worth it for mayfly tails. You can always but micro-fibbets tails or even use an old paint bruch fibers for tail.
Happy Tying!

A couple of years ago I really got into tying Pardigon nymphs, the pebble. Most of these patterns require a CDL, or Coq-de-Leon tails. I did a little research and found that Whiting genetically engineers birds just for tail material. Whiting sells this material in Tailing Packs. There normally two shoulder patches in each pack and sell for about $15.00. There are color options to pick from. I picked a medium pardo. I love this material it holds up well.
