I bought a pair of old model Simms G4 Pro Boots with Viabram soles earlier this year, and want to get cleats or studs for them. The boots have 10 pre-formed spots in each boot for cleats. I called Simms who said it is a personal preference for cleats vs. studs. They said the decision on hardbite vs. Alumibite depends on where you fish. I fish mainly in the Missouri trout streams — Montauk and Bennet Spring.
Looking for suggestions on Alumibite vs. hardbite and cleats vs. studs for these boots.
Also, suggestions on use of Simms product here. Had Rock Treads on previous boots but don’t see that they have comparable product.

Don, I have the same boots and wanted to install rock treads but they were not available at the time. I went with the Sims Hardbite system. They come in a set of 10 so you will need two sets unless you skimp like I did and just install 5 per boot. The price at the time was $50 a set but has come down to $35. They do work pretty well even with only 5 per boot. They are easy to install and you don’t need to drill a hole through the sole. I will probably buy another set just to have a little more grip.

Don, I have a set of rock treads that I used once. I removed them from my first pair of boots (long story) and still have them. I bought new Korkers and they have a replaceable sole w/cleats that I bought, so I don’t need the Rock Treads anymore. The Rock Treads were fairly simple to install. If needed, I’ll make you a sweet deal on these. You can get them from me to see if they will work on your boots. I’d be happy to help you install as well. Ken

Hey Don,
I must admit I am a Rock Treads guy. In fact, I have had them on G4 boots and liked them. But, your question made me curious about other traction options so I looked up the studs/cleats on the Simms website. You say you have a pair of G4 boots. I saw on the bottom of the Simms studs/cleats page a notice that these are not compatible with G4 boots. Just wanted to throw that out there. I hope the following link works.

P.S. I you don’t buy Ken’s Rock Treads, I just might.
