Grasshoppers, education in fly fishing you must have.
Here is a tip that I just heard on a podcast that we can use or at least think about (credit: Tom Rosenbauer’s Orvis fly fishing guide podcast)
Why would 68 degrees be important? As of late, many of us have seen the Trico spinner “clouds” in the morning at Montauk. Tricos are very tiny mayflys. And, we’ll be seeing more of them as the weather cools – to 68 degrees. The early morning temperatures have been hitting 68 degrees as of late and that is why we have been seeing those Trico spinner clouds as we approach the river early (and as the weather warms up – they are gone!) Be ready to fish a Trico hatch in the morning as temperatures hit this magic number. If fish are rising maybe a Trico spinner pattern or even a Griffith’s Gnat may get them to take on top. Or swinging an RS2 or attaching it to an indicator may bring fish to the net. Yes, they are small but sometimes we must think small to catch big!!
