Tips: I approach my favorite water or water that I have never fished the same.

Before going I check trip reports or talk to a fly shop for the area. I’ll check the flow rate and water levels to make sure I can successfully fish the area. I’ll look at the hatch charts for the area and time of year.

Approaching the water I check the bugs in the air and under rocks, spider webs is GREAT idea. I’ll check for rises and the type of rise. I’ll observe before prancing into the water and look for fish. I’ll look for riffles, runs and pools to see if there is any activity there. If I see fish I ask myself are they feeding (look for side to side movement or the white of their mouths).

Then I’ll decide on how to fish (dry fly, swing, dead drifting, high stick or Euro nymph).
