Good discussion topic. I usually don’t pick my rod for a specific location (I usually bring four rods on each trip). But I actually select the rod I will use by the water conditions, are the fish rising or not or just how I want to fish on this particular day.

If I’m going into a situation where I may throw bigger stuff – streamers, buggers, stoneflies. I’ll pick my rod that has a little more backbone – my Sage One, 9 foot, 5wt. The Sage One can also handle nymphing too.

If I’m going to dry fly, swing wet flies or fish small flies (even when nymphing) I really like my new 9 foot, 4wt, Orvis Helios 3F. Very sweet rod.

If I decide to nymph all day I’ll go with my Euro-nymphing rod. Mine is a Redington Hydrogen, 3wt, 10 foot.  Euro-nymphing can get you into places that other techniques can’t. If there is a lot of pocket water or fast moving water I’ll load up my Hydrogen rod
