Great Weather–No, Great Fishing –Meh, Great Company–Yes = Great Day! A group of die-hard FATC guys including Bob Moore, Jim Craig, Glenn Haake, Don Varner, Scott Dougherty, Sid Aslin, and Vernon Preston took off on the coldest, rainiest day of the season for Montauk with warm thoughts of nets full of fish. When the team arrived, the thermometer said 41, however the rain slowed to a drizzle. The fishing before lunch was slow, with everyone getting at least one fish in the net. During a cold lunch (it was warmer in the water), the guys were reinvigorated with the stoppage of rain, so they head back on the water, where the action picked up a bit. By the end of the day, the sun was out warming their bones and the fishing picked up–better than the morning, but not spectacular. The good news is that the weather kept many people away and the park was fairly empty until the sun came out and the weekenders started to arrive. Everyone ended up with a few (or more) fish in their nets. The trip was topped off by a good dinner at Hick’s BBQ. A various assortment of flys did well–red worm, pink worm, black / white / brown woolly buggers, soft hackle, cracklebacks, Bob’s chubby Chernobyl, a white maggot (the big hurt scores again). What’s missing from this list? Midges–midges struck out.The fall season is here, time to bundle up and dress warm. No more wet wading! It was a great day
