I now have a fly tying vise and am looking to add a new vice to my life. What type of tools does a beginner need, are there particular kits that are better than others?
What kind of materials should I begin with?
Looking for ideas and suggestions.
I do hope to drop by an upcoming fly tying Thursday evening event.
Thanks
Glenn.

It is generally a good idea to pick a few flys you want to tie and buy those materials to start. The choices can be overwhelming. Start on our sites fly tying page. There are videos that show you how to tie. Pick a few that you think you can do and get the materials. One of our sponsors Dooly’s Fly Fishing has a great selection and prices on tying materials. As far as tools Dr Slick makes good tools at reasonable prices. Also Loon and several others work well too. I have one of the Dr Slick sets that I have used since I started. Works great. Just don’t go super cheap. Cheap scissors and bobbins are just that. Cheap and will only frustrate you. A couple extra scissors and bobbins are also very handy. I would suggest before you buy, come out to one of the Thursday’s when we are tying and see what the guys are using. You will get lots of information on what works and what does not.

I teach a free beginner (first time ever tying) class in my home periodically. Are you interested? I go through everything to get you started! Email me at tseaton@stlcop.edu if you want to arrange a time (usually Saturdays 9 AM-12 noon).

Haakeg,
You have received some great advice. I recommend taking up Terry’s offer of a beginner’s class, attend the Thursday fly tying sessions and pick out just a couple of flies to start tying. The woolybugger and the midge larva would be a good place to start. Buy just the materials for those flies and learn how to tie them. Tools: Good equipment is important – don’t need the top of the line. scissors, a couple of bobbins, threader, bead tweezers, hackle pliers, bodkin, a martinelli whip finisher and a few others that the FATC can tell you about. Have fun with it.

First Thursday night – Check. I look forward to more.
Taking Terry up on his offer – Check
Tools and materials will come after my day with Terry. I like the idea of the midge larva and wooly bugger.
I’m looking forward to my first fly.
I appreciate all of the “Ad-vice”!
