Has anyone used either the electric recharchable hand warmers or the Zippo catalytic hand warmers? I’ve used many of the disposable ones but interested to know if the other types work better.

I have one of the old Zippo catalytic hand warmers. They work just fine but are heavy and they smell like lighter fluid. I think that you will need the little bag that they came with to keep the hot metal surface off your hands. They do get hot!

Do they still make them? Mine is pretty old. I use the chemical type hand warmers. When they are fresh, they work very well. Once they get old (new in the package) they don’t work as well.

I can’t answer this question directly. I have read two great articles on staying warm on the water. Both appeared in Domenick Swentosky’s, Troutbitten weekly news letter. The first was titled “Winter Hands”, the second “Fly Fishing in the Winter-Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes.” The first, “Winter Hands”, was picked up and reappeared in this week’s Midcurrent news letter. Kenny’s advise on dressing and preparing for winter fishing are also very sound. I always adhere too, NO COTTON, along with MEND, MEND, MEND!

      Good reads, hope it helps.
