Do you ever notice how the cold weather warms up fast when your catching fish? Five FATC started this day with temperatures right at about 18 degrees. Jim Craig, Barry Dunnegan, Bill Byington, Kenny Klimes and a mystery man headed to fish the Meramec river and the park on this frigid Tuesday morning. Four started outside the park to check out the “brown situation” and Bill stayed in the park to fish. A few fish were caught outside the park but not like it should have been. By noon the guys headed back in the park for lunch and the afternoon temps started to warm up in the high 30’s. Each man hit different spots throughout the afternoon. Big fish of the day went to Barry with a nice 16 inch rainbow. Trout in the 15-12 inch range were caught most of the day. The best flies were the scud, Barr’s emerger, Griffith’s gnat, mole hair leech and Landon Mayer’s leech patterns, and wooly buggers.
Still trying to figure out Meramec river. They have been stocking 1500-2000 browns per month but just not sure where they have been going – we’ll find them!! But inside the park is fishing well, especially if you are not afraid to throw small stuff. There are BIG fish in the park so you better get there before February 12th and before the cheese throwers take them home after March 1st.
