Events: Scouts – Cub Launch

Submitted by Denzel Garner

On a lovely, cool Saturday morning, October 10, 2026, three enthusiastic FATC members— Jim Craig, Ken Welter, and me (Denny Garner)—headed to Warren Levis Lake in Godfrey, Illinois. Our mission was to help out at the Cub Launch Event by running the Fishing Station and cheering on the adventurous Scouts as they tried their hand at fishing. For most of them, it was their very first time.

We teamed up with Dennis and Danny from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), who were already there setting up spinning rods and getting ready for the day. They arrived early with more than 20 rigs and plenty of worms. We found out they work part-time, mostly in the summer, teaching fishing skills to kids and adults across southern Illinois. Jim was pretty interested in their side gig once he heard the hourly pay! We shared the FATC story and handed out our cards. Both guys were curious about fly fishing and learning more about FATC—especially Danny, who lives in Chesterfield, Missouri, and teaches at Hazelwood High School.

Did I mention the free lunch?  We enjoyed a delicious meal that included hotdogs, chili, and dessert (ice cream and brownies). That was an added treat and kept us fueled and ready for the afternoon fishing with the kids.

Throughout the day, we stayed busy baiting hooks, demonstrating casting techniques, and helping Scouts and parents land fish. It was a joy to make the day memorable for everyone. We usually had 5 to 10 kids at our station during the six hours. The majority caught at least one fish—mostly bluegill. The big smiles on the proud Scouts and their parents showed exactly why FATC loves supporting events like this.
