Trips: A Hot, Slow Graduation

A Hot Slow Graduation

On Tuesday, June 24th, Glenn Haake took David Taylor to Montauk for a graduation trip.   They were joined by Scott Morris, Steve Sherlock, Derrik Kassebaum, Larry Mangels, Bob Born, Bob Palisch, Denny Garner, Matt McClure, and Harold Bates.   The forecast for the day was HOT, with the heat index over 100.  It really wasn’t too bad standing in the cool water, most decided to wet wade.    The park was fairly empty, giving the FATC group room to spread out.    It turned out to be a beautiful day, with no rain.   The river was low and clear, even with the rain the previous day.

After gearing up at the naturalist cabin, the group fanned out across the park.   Glenn and David headed to the boulder where they practiced some casting then went to work.    David was able to catch fish using several techniques, including swinging a crackleback, a nymph, a wooly bugger and even got a take on a dry fly.

After the morning session everyone met back at the Stag tables to enjoy lunch and swap stories.  It was a fairly slow morning for everyone.

After lunch everyone fanned out across the park to find that the fishing didn’t improve much in the afternoon.    There weren’t a lot of fish to be seen or caught above the boulder.

The group headed to JB Malone’s in Salem for dinner.    They had good food, fairly quick service at an economical price.   We’ll definitely be back.

Another beautiful day of fishing with a new graduate, who seemed hooked.  Make sure you join in on the fun.    Get out there and go fishing.

On a side note, Matt and Harold floated the next day from Baptist Camp to Parkers Ford, they said the fishing was better outside the park.
