Trips: LT Fishing Roundup

Glenn Haake, Jim Craig, Sam McClure & Matt McClure had the opportunity to fish Kenny Klimes new home water – Lake Taneycomo.  Yes, you heard that right. Kenny now spends the majority of his time in the Springfield/Branson area and transferred his season fishing pass from Montauk to LT.  We have been waiting for an invitation but never received one so we packed up and invited ourselves even though he wasn’t available to fish with us.

Our home base was Port Royale where we reserved a very affordable, spacious condo within walking distance to the river. Port Royale is a great location as it’s a gated community and therefore cuts down drastically on the number of fishermen in that stretch of the river.  It’s almost like having your own private stretch of prime water.

Overall, LT was fishing extremely well and the generation schedule was optimal to wade fish most of the time. Quality bows were caught by all of us. The weather was incredible.  In fact most of our faces looked like we just got back from a tropical fishing destination by the end of the trip.  Lots of sun and some wind.

First day we got lucky. Originally, they were going to start generation around noon but didn’t start until almost 3pm.  By that time we all had caught good numbers of fish and had pretty much fished a full day.  We were able to fish some shallow low flow slack water close to the condo complex for another hour before calling it a day.

On the morning of the second day we fished Port Royale stretch while the generation schedule behaved. Around 10:30am the generation started and the flows increased making it impossible to wade fish.  No problem as we anticipated the flows increasing late morning/early afternoon and prior to the trip made 1/2 day float fishing reservations through River Run Outfitters.  We paired up two to a boat with a guide and floated from the Sheperd of the Hills location to our take out just past Fall Creek.  Both boats hauled in their fare share of quality rainbows.

On day three we woke up to water generation limiting our wade fishing opportunities.  However, generation was to decrease beginning at 10am.  It was right on time.  We were back to wading a great stretch of river by 10:30ish.  We wrapped up around 3pm, headed to Danna’s Restaurant for late lunch and headed back to St. Louis.

The flies that worked best were:  Green & Red Crackleback, RS2, Olive and Brown Woolybuggers, Ruby 2 and Ruby Midge, Zebra Midge,Egg

Even though Kenny didn’t invite us down to his home waters and didn’t fish with us we had him on our minds.  We had the opportunity in the evening while enjoying our accommodations to discuss several pathways for Kenny’s Long-term Care Plan.  All of us were able to share our thoughts and provide what I feel was healthy input.  Jim and Glenn volunteered to present several Long-term Care proposals to Kenny during the next board meeting.
