Tuesday, July 11th was another graduation trip. This time it was for Alex Wein (pronounced Wine) and there was no whining as Alex was super prepared and did very well with all techniques used during the day. If I am not mistaken, he caught about ten or more trout on his graduation trip. He was joined by Bob Palisch, Don Varner, Christopher Beahm, Jim Franke, Tom Petrie, Ken Welter and of course, Kenny Klimes.
The temperatures for the day were predicted to be in the 90s but standing in the cool water kept all cool during fishing. Montauk State Park was the location and since it is summer the park was what Kenny considers “crowded”. But we had room to fish and catch.
Kenny worked with Alex on swinging small flies, stripping buggers, and nymphing with and indicator. Alex had two trout in the net before lunch and then many more after lunch. The rest of the gang did well also with flies such as the small Mayer’s leech, glo-bugs, cerise worms, zebra midges, blonde leeched and euro-nymphing flies all did well. It seemed the best water was where the water was moving – fast. The water in the park was low and slow in most places giving the trout time to look and study each fly. Being stealthy helped to produce more fish that includes using fluorocarbon tippet in the 5X and 6X range.
Alex, as the “graduate” got to pick the place to have fellowship dinner and opted for a brand-new place. We traveled to St James and ate at the Public House that sits on the northside of Hwy 44. They have a limited menu on Monday and Tuesday (pizza and salads) but the rest of the week their menu includes more selections. They are also a brewery and have many craft beers and wines. Give it a try!
