This FATC trip had an 80% chance of rain. Not sure what that means. I think it means that “sometime” during the day there will be an 80% chance that it might rain sometime during the day. Ok, that makes sense. Well, we had an 80% chance of rain on this trip and we had rain for about 30 minutes – light rain – for 30 minutes. But boy did it scare all the fair-weather fly fishers away. Cloudy, cool and lots of fish in the net – you missed it. And we graduated Richard Doerr, Rick Doerr’s father!!

Paul Jacoby, Harold Bates, Sid Aslin joined me (Kenny Klimes) and Richard Doerr on his graduation trip at Montauk State Park.  As the three spread out throughout the park, Richard and I hit the boulder area to practice some casting and fly-fishing techniques. Stripping, swinging, and dead drifting was the way of the morning session. After a couple of “demos” on catching trout by Kenny, Richard missed a few but was not worried because after lunch he had the whole afternoon to test his skills.

After our fellowship lunch, Paul and Sid left to parts unknown in the “uncrowded” park while Harold joined Richard and Kenny at the top of the spring.  They made their way down stream dead drifting bead head flies and San Juan worms. The fly of the day was Kenny’s super-secret “Hair of the Dog” fly. It brought Richard his first of many rainbows until he lost it. But he later used a crackle back with much success swinging it near the “cable” in the park.  Harold caught a nice rainbow in the upper stretches of the park. And Paul and Sid said they also did well. It was a good day!

Congratulations to Richard on his graduation! I think he will back on the water more and more in the future. Maybe he just might out fish his son! With the summer months coming the parks will be packed so we will have more trips outside the parks and in other states.
