Kenny’s ESN class a couple of weeks ago has sparked my interest in trying this technique. I have an Orvis Recon 9’ 5 wt. rod that is probably not sensitive enough, so I have searched the web for rod reviews. There are lots of reviews on individual rods but I did find a 2018 shootout by Trident Fly Fishing comparing several brands and models. (see the link below)

      https://www.tridentflyfishing.com/blog/2018-european-style-nymphing-fly-rod-shootout-fly-rod-review/

Of the top three, the Marryat Tactical Pro Nymph Special 10′ 6” 3wt seems to be a good mid-priced choice except for the handle, but I haven’t heard anyone mention this brand. Does anyone have experience with Marryat rods? I also welcome suggestions for other rods in the mid-price range.

      Hi Bill,

I recommend Moonshine Rod Company. Check out their link: http://www.moonshinerods.com

I purchased The Epiphany-3wt.-10’6”-downlocker ESN rod. Like you I was researching different mid-price range euro-rods towards the end of last year. I researched the trident shootout prior to my purchased and their shootout was informative but, they left out a lot of other quality rods out of their shootout. I’m extremely happy with The Epiphany from Moonshine. In my opinion the Epiphany is extremely sensitive compared to other higher price euro rods, which is important in a euro rod. The components of the rod has the same quality as the higher priced rod. It is a rather new rod company and the owner spent his time answering all my questions on his company’s rods. In fact Moonshine Rod Company gave us (FATC) 50% off discount for three rods to be auctioned at this past year charity dinner. I believe Kenny won one of the discounts and purchased The Epiphany euro rod. Maybe, he will chime in on his opinion on the Epiphany.

Good luck in your decision. I found purchasing a euro nymphing specific rod has definitely helped greatly with this technique.

      Tightlines.

      Grasshoppers:

A new kid is on the block. The Redington Strike Euro Nymphing rod that your FATC Sensei will be “testing” soon. I understand one of your members owns Woolybugger Fly Company which is now carrying this new Euro rod. Discount he offers to all FATC members which should put this rod on top of your list. Comes in 3-4 wts and 10ft – 11 ft long.

I am using a 10 1/2 foot, 4 wt Redington Euro-Strike rod. Got it from Woolybugger Fly Co., one of our sponsors and owned by our very own Jason Edwards. I like it. It had a longer cork handle so no matter what reel you use it should balance itself depending on where you hold the handle. Plus, the price won’t break the bank.

I have also had a moonshine (sold it) and a Redington Hydrogen (sold it). They are also decent rods but Redington no longer sell the Hydrogen rod.

I have a 10’ 6” – 3wt. Marryat Tactical Pro Special Nymph Rod.  Like the feel.  Very sensitive. Down locking reel seat.  Paired with a 5wt reel for balance.  .022 Cortland euro nymph line.  I make my own leaders.
