Please share with everyone on “WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON”off the water to improve your fly fishing skills, during our limited pandemic time on the water? I’m hoping for this to be a learning tool for all.
-I’m working on learning/improving on the euro/mono rig/tightlining techniques. I’m doing this by reading specific subject related books/articles/youtube videos. I found information resources most helpful by George Daniel, Devin Olsen, Orvis, Troutbitten, and Lance Egan. Use your favorite search engine to find names of resource. I’ve applied what I have learned by casting in the backyard, practicing different knots, building different leader formulas. Tying specific euro fly patterns. I have went to local ponds trying the techniques learned fishing for blue gills. I’ve done this by respecting the social distancing.
-I’m working on to improve sight-fishing. I’m getting tired of blind casting into water hoping a fish will bite. I know reading the water but, it’s not always productive. Books written by Landon Mayer have been a good resource to improve your skills on this subject. I’ve learned on ways to shield your face and eyes to reduce glare from the water. Actually, what to look for pass the surface water. Sight fishing under different water conditions high, muddy, etc… Learning the difference between the vegetation, rocks and fish (no laughing). Hunting fish for shadows, silhouettes, tails, dorsal fins. There is a lot more to sight-fishing then just looking for a detailed image of the trout body. Yes, I have done this by sight-fishing at the local ponds. It’s amazing how effective it is when you take the time to focus on hunting/sight-fishing. Seeing is believing! LOL?
Maybe, by sharing what we are working on might help put more fish into the net!
Tightlines.
